Nigeria is Africa's largest producer and consumer of rice.[1] With more than 3.5 million hectares planted each year and a cultivation system that stretches from riverside smallholder plots to large commercial irrigation schemes, understanding how that rice gets grown tells a broader story about agriculture across West Africa.[2]
Three cultivation systems
Not all rice land in Nigeria works the same way. The country's farms fall into three main categories, each shaped by access to water and the nature of the soil.
About half of all production comes from rain-fed lowland farms, known locally as fadama land, found in the river valleys of the Niger and Rima basins. These plots sit in naturally fertile clay soils that retain moisture from rainfall and seasonal flooding. They are the most reliable non-irrigated farmland in the country, and they drive the bulk of output in Kebbi, Niger, and surrounding states.
A further 30% comes from upland farms on well-drained, elevated soils. These farms rely entirely on rainfall and face greater risk from dry spells. Farmers here typically grow NERICA varieties, developed to combine the drought hardiness of African rice species with the yield potential of Asian ones.
The remaining 15 to 20% comes from irrigated lowland schemes, where man-made dams and pump systems allow two or three harvests a year. These are the most productive farms in the country but also the most capital-intensive to establish and operate.[2]
Who does the farming
The backbone of Nigeria's rice production is the smallholder farmer. More than 80% of the country's paddy comes from plots under two hectares, tended largely by hand or with access to basic hired equipment.[3]
Commercial outgrower schemes have grown significantly in recent years. Under these arrangements, a corporate partner supplies certified seeds, crop inputs, and machinery to a network of smallholders and guarantees to buy back the harvest at an agreed price. The model bridges the gap between subsistence farming and industrial-scale production, and it has become a key driver of output growth across the major producing states.
Where production is concentrated
The North-West region accounts for over 70% of Nigeria's total rice output.[5] Kebbi State is the single largest producer, followed by Niger, Kano, and Jigawa States. These states benefit from large-scale irrigation infrastructure that allows farming through the dry season, when smallholder output in rain-fed areas drops sharply.
Southern production is smaller in volume but commercially significant. Ebonyi State's Abakaliki rice and Ogun State's Ofada rice are heritage varieties that command premium prices for their distinct flavour and appearance. Both have established demand in consumer markets where imported polished rice cannot compete on taste.
Managing weeds on the rice farm
Weed pressure is one of the most damaging problems a rice farmer faces. Left unmanaged, competing vegetation can reduce yields by 30 to 70% in a single season.[6] Effective control requires a structured approach that matches the right product to the right stage of the crop's growth cycle.
The standard practice in Nigerian rice farming runs in layers. Before planting, a non-selective herbicide clears the field of existing vegetation and stubble. Immediately after sowing, a pre-emergence herbicide is applied to the soil to stop weed seeds from germinating before the crop gets established. Once the rice and weeds have both emerged, a selective post-emergence herbicide targets the specific weed species present without harming the rice plant.[7]
Getting this sequence right, with the correct products applied at the right time, is often the difference between a productive harvest and a season of losses.
Surplus and Pyrazo
Surplus is Candel's pre-emergence herbicide for rice, groundnut, and other arable crops. Its active ingredient, butachlor, targets annual grasses and early broadleaf weeds in the soil before they break through the surface.
Pyrazo is Candel's broad-spectrum post-emergence rice herbicide. Highly concentrated, one sachet treats one hectare and controls a wide range of grass weeds, broadleaves, and sedges that emerge alongside the rice crop.
